2006 - Joan Snyder

2006 Joan Snyder

The 2006 Presentation Print of the Print Club of New York is by New York artist Joan Snyder. Oasis was also created in collaboration with master printer Randy Hemminghaus of the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper. A combination of digital and silkscreen printing, Oasis grew out of the artist's Black Pond series. A swirling image within a square format, Oasis was made by Snyder drawing on Mylar in black ink. A series of these drawings were then transferred to the various screens-one for each color; the final print ultimately utilized four. The goal was a painterly, watercolor-like effect. To achieve this, the artist and Hemminghaus worked with a digitized image of Snyder's initial watercolor study for the project, trying to find the perfect balance between digital background and screened portions. The two worked through a series of proofs before settling on the final palette-one combining tones of vivid blue with passages of red and lime green, the latter added by hand to each print in the edition. Joan Snyder received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Rutgers University's Douglass College. Indeed, her 1966 MFA exhibition launched her career, which culminated in a much-acclaimed 2005 retrospective at New York's Jewish Museum, accompanied by a catalogue published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Snyder's prints, paintings and sculptures are in the collections of a number of major museums, including the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.
